Pondcherry Kiki!

Posted by kikidecker on 17 August, 2008

Hello World, So you may have gathered from the other posts that we are in Pondicherry and our journey had adventurous aspects. I’ll not dwell on that. Our accommodations are lovely relatively speaking, the floor being lovely without need for relativity, and there are cute lizards in my room.

One thing I find especially neat is the style of dress, at the conference there were many many ladies dressed in extremely fine textiles of silk, ?taffeta and cotton with fantastic patterns and color combinations, wrapped in I’m sure intricate and important ways that designate all kinds of things about status and origin that I don’t know much about.  They had flowers in their hair and clearly were like 500x better dressed than me on a good day. I kind of felt like I was in 19th century France with the level of fancy these ladies were presenting! I haven’t had a chance to pick up any fabric yet, but I hopefully I will soon. The street shopping places are kind of intimidating to me, but after we eat here at this coffee shop we are going to do a little shopping I think.

People aren’t staring at me all that much, really, but I think the ladies who take care of the hostel we’re staying at think I’m neat. Paras says they’ve been following me around a little. I’ve only been asked my height 2 x so far, which is probably less than I average back home.

Lastly I’ve been using deet every day since on the first day I developed like 50+ bug bites which I assume are mosquitoes because at this point they are itching like crazy. So before I descend into a Dengue-induced delirium let me say that India is really fantastic and I am having a great time!

(PS: Since Kiki the neurologist and I had a great talk about how unusual it is to run into other Kikis, I’m using my old nickname, so don’t be too confused; it’s also my gmail and wordpress handle.)
